THE HEART OF CYBERPUNK x STREETSIDES OF SHAMSHUIPO

A new film double exposure series in response to the recently controversial Cyberpunk Exhibition at Tung Chau Street Temporary Market in Shamshuipo organised by HK Design Centre.

Capturing the series from a neutral perspective, I’m interested to explore the boundary between officially-commissioned campaigns and real-life secular happenings, which seem to be rather unbridgeable and paradoxical at times.

What are the essential icons/ingredients of the so-called ‘Cyberpunk’? Just solely the notion of ‘High Tech, Low Life’? A mixture of futuristic fantasy and faded collective nostalgia? Or an imaginary dystopian visual-flare package for the sake of artistic presentation and consumer industry?

Within a single image, which elements are from the streets, and which artefacts are from the exhibition? Sometimes we can’t immediate tell from the overlapped images at all...

Cyberpunk installations inside the venue vs. SSP residents’ everyday life outside the venue... How to bridge them? (or do we ever need to?) Do the residents know what cyberpunk is? (or do they ever need to?) Do the exhibition goers know Shamshuipo’s history? (or do they ever need to?)

Would be an endless debate involving many stakeholders, but for a society to grow healthier, perhaps we’ll need to dig deeper into these issues in the future.
